Mike Abrashoff was the most junior officer in the Pacific Fleet when he took command of one of the worst-performing ships. Fifteen months later, the USS Benfold was the best ship in the entire Navy, using the same crew. The story of that transformation holds lessons for every organization: leadership matters, and culture is everything. Mike didn’t learn these lessons from a textbook. He lived them.

Mike couldn’t choose his mission, his people, or his budget, so he focused on the one thing he could influence: himself and his ship’s culture. His test for that culture was simple: Would you want your son or daughter to come work for you? He found five departments working as five silos and replaced command and control with commitment and cohesion. He set a goal of getting 1% better today than yesterday, and 1% better tomorrow than today. He questioned the status quo, interviewed all 310 sailors individually, and listened to the people doing the work. “I didn’t turn the ship around. My crew did that,” Mike says. “What I did was create an environment where they felt safe, empowered, and supported. When you do that, anything is possible.” When crew members brought him a problem, his answer was always, “It’s your ship. How would you fix it?”

Mike’s own curiosity has deep roots. His mother taught junior high until she was 86. At 50, when her car kept breaking down, she didn’t complain. She went to night school at the Voc-Tech and became a certified auto mechanic. If he had just 10% of her intellectual curiosity, Mike likes to say, he’d do okay.

The results were a breakthrough: turnover fell to an unprecedented 1%, the rate of promotions tripled, and the crew cut operating expenses by 25%. The Benfold won the prestigious Spokane Trophy for the highest degree of combat readiness.

Dozens of publications, including The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business Review, and Fast Company, have cited Mike’s story as an inspiring lesson for business. Leaders especially identify with his experience of being accountable for results in an environment where he couldn’t make the rules.

Mike is the author of four books. His first, It’s Your Ship, has sold over 1.6 million copies. It’s Our Ship and Get Your Ship Together show how business leaders have put these principles into action in their own organizations. His latest, Ship Happens (co-authored with Stacey Cunningham), is a guide for leaders that details the strategies he used to turn the Benfold into the top-performing ship.

Mike has spoken to every industry and kind of audience, from board retreats to front-line personnel, from sales groups to universities, and from Fortune 500s to startups. Audiences connect with his humility and his practical, firsthand approach, and he tailors his message to accountability, engagement, change, safety, teamwork, innovation, and more.

Before commanding the Benfold, Mike served as military assistant to Secretary of Defense William J. Perry. He also helped draft the air defense plan for naval forces in the Persian Gulf in 1990, coinciding with Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, and served as executive officer of the cruiser Shiloh, which deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of United Nations sanctions against Iraq.

Mike is the founder of Aegis Performance Group, a consulting firm that supports leaders as they address leadership, talent, and performance challenges. He and his team help leaders at all levels reimagine their leadership thinking and find new ways to elevate individual, team, and organizational performance.

  • It’s Your Ship – Empowering People, Strengthening Teams

When Mike Abrashoff took command of the USS Benfold, morale was low, turnover was high, and the ship ranked near the bottom of the Pacific Fleet. Just 15 months later, with the same crew, the USS Benfold ranked #1. The difference? A new approach to leadership that put accountability, trust, safety, and initiative at the center of the culture. Mike broke down silos, listened to the people closest to the work, and challenged traditional top-down leadership. After personally interviewing all 310 sailors, he empowered his crew to lead at every level. When someone brought him a problem, his response became a defining principle of his leadership: “What would YOU do? It’s YOUR ship!” Drawing on powerful stories and practical lessons from his time in command, Mike shows leaders how to drive curiosity, build cohesive teams, create a culture of accountability, and deliver extraordinary results – even when conditions aren’t ideal. Mike’s keynote can be tailored to your organization’s needs, from a high-impact keynote to half-day or full-day leadership programs that give teams more time to explore these principles, engage in deeper discussion, and put the lessons into practice.

    Key Takeaways:

    • Build a culture of trust and accountability.
    • Apply the “It’s Your Ship” philosophy to take performance to unimagined levels.
    • Lead differently: a fresh playbook for new and emerging leaders.
    • Break down silos and strengthen teams.
    • Make safety everyone’s responsibility.
I used to say to my crew – it’s your ship. You own the ship just as much as I do. If you see something that needs to be done, step up to the plate – take action.
No matter how fantastic your message is, if no one is receiving it, you aren’t communicating.
The best way to keep a ship – or any organization – on course for success is to give the troops all the responsibility they can handle and then stand back.
Leadership is not about being liked – it’s about staying safe in tough times and giving people a vision of why what they’re doing is important so they can make a difference.
I began with the idea that there is always a better way to do things.
I can order my people around – but I can’t order them to stay.
Show me an organization in which employees take ownership, and I will show you one that beats its competitors.
Leaders must be willing to put the ship’s performance ahead of their egos, which for some is harder than others.
Leaders need to understand how profoundly they affect people, how their optimism and pessimism are equally infectious, how directly they set the tone and spirit of everyone around them.
